Congregants at Kyamugamba Catholic Church in Wairagaza trading centre, Butoole parish, Kyangwali Sub County in the newly created Kikuube District were irritated and confused following a teargas canister explosion during a Sunday church service.
According to police, at least two were injured in the melee and were rushed to Kituuti health centre in Kyangwali Sub County for medical treatment.
One of the congregant explains that a teargas canister exploded mid-way into the service causing a stampede in the church as Christians fled for their lives.
Mr Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesman said two suspects were arrested in connection with the incident.
“When the canister blew up, the Christians first thought it was a bomb and scampered for their lives but it was later noticed that it was a teargas canister. Since two suspects have been arrested, they will tell us how and where they obtained it,” Mr Hakiza said.
Police detectives swiftly rushed to the scene and restored the calm before advising the Christians to resume the service.
Police said the suspects who are detained at Wairagaza police station face charges of being in illegal possession of fire arms and attempted murder.
