Bugiri municipality MP aspirant who double as Justice Forum (JEEMA) party president Asuman Basalirwa accused police of trying to assassinate him during Thursday shooting that killed his body guard.
Basalirwa aide Ramanthan Walyendo died in Bugiri hospital after sustaining bullet wounds during Basalirwa rally a long Saza Road in Bugiri after police opened fire on Basalirwa supporters. The 30 years old sustained severe injury in the shoulder and was rush to hospital in critical condition. He was confirmed dead by medics at the hospital on Friday morning.
Speaking to reporters on Saturday morning, Basalirwa said the bullet that killed his aide was aimed at him but he narrowly survived by grace of God.
He said he was standing next to Walyendo by the time of his shooting.
Basalirwa, a lawyer who is high Court advocate said he will seek legal redress against the errant police officer.
He warned Police against working for NRM and president Museveni stating they will be held responsible for their actions.
Basalirwa added that any acts of intimidation and harassment of his supporters by security operatives won’t be tolerated. He ask police to respect constitution and work for all Ugandans regardless of their political affiliations, religion and gender.
Police said they have commenced investigation into the matter asking for calms among opposition supporters.
Police assured deceased family and Basalirwa camp that the culprit will be prosecuted in court of law.
Bugiri by-election is slated for July 27 has attracted contestants from from both FDC and JEEMA from opposition parties. DP and UPC didn’t not field any candidate rallying their support behind Basalirwa.
