South Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayaradit has shocked the world by promoting his wife to the rank of Major General in world youngest nation’s army.
According to army, Salva Kiir ordered for promotion of Mary Ayen but has not assigned her special duties to undertake.
The same promotion exercise which took place on 27 July saw two other women elevated from the rank of Brigadier to Major General.
The army Spoke person Lul Ruai Koang confirmed the development saying, the country has been waiting for a long time to have female generals serving in the army.
He added that the promoted female officers have served in the military since 1983 and played key roles in the liberation struggle that saw the country broke away from their Northern counterparts in 2005. He encouraged many women to join the Forces so as to serve their country well.
Koang added that the promotion of the women was based on the competence and experience they have in the army adding that it is step forward in ensuring total peace in the country.
South Sudan since attaining its independence from Sudan has not had peace with several warlords controlling different parts of the country.
The United Nations group of experts in 2014 blames the South Sudan problem on too many generals in the army many of which without deployment.
