President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been accused by residents of Rupa sub county Moroto district of silently working with Mr Cornelius Kodet a local businessman and some minister to forcefully grab people’s land.
The residents took to the street to peacefully demonstrate against Mr Kodet’s plan to establish a new cement manufacturing plant in the area. The new cement plant if built will occupy a total of 442 acres of the land which is expected to be full of minerals. Residents said they were not consulted on the decision to establish the new factory which the claim will displace hundreds of families.
State minister for Ethics and Integrity Ethics Fr. Simon Peter Lokodo and his Trade counter part hon Michael Weirike tried to calm the rowdy residents but the situation got out of hand with the locals accusing president of using them to steal their mineral rich land in the name of establishing Ateker cement factory.
They accused the investor of dubbing in 2010 that the president was going to build them 100 modern residential houses but ended up surveying the land secretly with a new plan of establishing a factory cement without getting approval from the land owners.
They also accused Mr Kodet of expanding the land size from 100 acres to 442 acres an act they termed as fraudulent with sole objectives of displacing the poor people who have nowhere to go.
Rupa sub county district councilor hon Joseph Otita accused Mr kodet of being a lair and fraudster who want to use his connection to the president to displace the helpless population.
He added that Kodet requested for the piece of land during his tenure as a sub county LC III chairperson in which he requested the piece of land to build modern villages but not his current plan of factory.
The locals who owns the land said they will not allow any cement factory on the piece of land threatens to mobilize community members against anyone who attempt to steel their land.
