A 52 year old former LC 1 chairman in Busara sub-county is nursing injuries in hospital after he was shot in the left leg by a UPDF soldier at a rally.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spoke man the victim as Venansio Byaruhanga, who was former LC 1 Chairperson of Nyakita cell, Kitanga parish. He said the victim was shot by one Kanyankore, a UPDF soldier attached to the office of Kabale district Resident District Commissioner (RDC).
Eye witnesses said the victim was shot on July 21, 2018 at around 6:25 pm after he asked the RDC to show the cause why the he forcing locals to vote for Annet Kabagambe, an NRM candidate during a rally at Kafunjo health center II.
Other eye witnesses said that the victim shot after he told the RDC Nantinda the he would vote for an opposition leaning independent Candidate Olivia Mbabazi.
“The Victim was not violent and he pleaded for mercy but the soldier continued slapping him and later shot him ” an eyewitness said.
RDCs accross the country have been accused for harassing and intimidating voters during the last concluded LC 1 Polls which ruling party NRM took the lion shares across the country.
Residents have however, called on police to arrest the errant soldier but their pleas have fallen on the deaf ears of police.
