Police in Gomba district have shot dead Kyadondo East member of parliament Kyagulanyi Robert supporter for holding protest demanding the release of the legislator and other detained members of parliament who were arrested in town on 13 August.
Police said the deceased was one of the group of people who expressed their disappointment at the security officers following the rearrests of Bobi Wine minutes after being released by army court on Thursday in Gulu.
He was identified as Vincent Sserungaya a local boda boda rider in Gomba town and a resident of Lusenke-Bukalagi Trading Centre in Kanoni Town Council. Gomba District is the ancestral home of the detained musician Bobo Wine.
Police attributed the killing to the stray bullet which hit him after resisting arrest by the security personnel.
After watching news at 7pm, residents upon learning that Bobi Wine was rearrested started rioting and engaging police in cat and mouse run. The protest was contained by police at 11 PM after almost 5 hours of running battle.
“One of our men killed him when police was battling rioters on Thursday night. The protests began at around 7 pm and ended at 11 pm following reports that their old boy at Bukalagi, Bobi Wine was re-arrested by police shortly after the General Court Martial had set him free. He was protesting with more than 10 boda-boda riders who are on the run but we will get them and prosecute them.” Katonga Regional Police spokesperson Mr Joseph Musana told reporters.
He said the angry residents blocked the roads using heavy logs and burnet car tyres in the road bringng traffic in the town to standstill. He added that the deceased tried to attack police with axes and panga
“When he saw our policemen, he decided to run away and hid in his house. In the process of getting him out, he got an axe and a panga, tried to attack on of the arresting officers with intention of injuring him. When our officer tried to rescue his life, he released a bullet that hit the attacker in the chest. Unfortunately, he died on the way to Gombe Hospital,” Mr Musana added.
The killer police has been identified as Sgt. Jonnie Ntibiramira an officer attached toKanoni Police Station.
