Police in Elgon region are investigating sources of a letter that was sent to Mbale District Woman MP Connie Galiwango, threatening to take her life if she did not send Shs 400 million to unidentified people.
The letter, which was seen by this website, was dropped at the MP’s country home in Butaleja Cell, Industrial Division in Mbale Municipality last Thursday.
“Dear Honorable Connie, we have been sent to clear you within this week unless you raise four hundred million on this number, 0780723011,” the letter reads in part.
The authors of the letter say they are the MP’s Old Girls at Mbale Secondary School for the year 2009-2012.
The number in question is found registered in the names of Moses Namisi.
The Elgon Region Police Spokesperson, Mr Robert Tukei, said Namisi has since been arrested in connection with the incident.
“We have arrested one suspect and he is in our custody. We are determined to find out the source of the letter and the motive,” he said at the weekend.
Ms Galiwango, when contacted, revealed that her life is in danger and that unknown people have been trailing her.
“We reported and I expect police to expedite investigations and arrest the culprits,” she said.
Ms Galiwango, who was one of the MPs at the forefront of supporting the age limit amendment Bill, last year told Parliament that she was receiving death threats.
In the weekend interview, she accused police of not doing enough to provide her with enough security.
“Unidentified people have been trailing me in Kampala and Mbale using a particular vehicle and motorcycles and I have tried to beg Uganda Police Force to give me security for protection but in vain,” she added.
