Bugiri Municipality election became chaotic today Friday after an NRM member of parliament representing Bukooli Centra Hon Solomon Silwanyi was caught red handed by residents while dishing out money to voters at the polling station.
The incident took place at Butambala central polling station. Angry and charged voters swung in action and started clobbering the MP. He also responded by beating and kicking back until he was saved by police in the area.
The MP also had pepper spray which used on the locals. Some people including journalists were injured in the process. He was later whisked away in police pickup.
Tensions have been high in Bugiri municipality ahead of election. Yesterday in the evening there was videos footage showing heavily armed police officers guarding the group of people who were distributing money to electorates in the area. The footage shows each person above 50 years being given 15,000 shillings while the youths were receiving 10,000 shillings. The exercise follows training and directive on who to vote.
Voting will close at 4:00 PM local time and the turn up have been huge in most polling stations with youths being the majority.
JEEMA candidate Asuman Basalirwa, NRM John Francis Oketcho and FDC Eunice Namatende are all hopeful of winning the seat. Heavy military deployments is seen through out the municipality.
