Lawyers representing Kyadondo east legislator Robert Kyagulanyi have spoken out against an alleged attack by the military ahead of tomorrow’s bail hearing. Komakech Henry Kilama one of the lawyers based in Gulu, who claims to have been receiving life-threatening messages, says armed soldiers attempted to break into his house last night. The Uganda law society has confirmed the reports of threats against its members. But the security agencies have dismissed these allegations.
The development came to the limelight a day before the hearing of bail application of the datained legislator and 33 others who are facing treasons charges.
Uganda law society has warned security forces and state agents against intimidating lawyers.
“Lawyers deserve to work in an environment free of intimidation,’ a statement from ULS read in part.
Uganda security forces have been on the spotlight for beating and torturing those who do not agree with the ruling government policy.
Several individuals who were recently arrested following Arua municipality pre election fracas have tortured. Notable among them is Mityana municipality member of parliament Francis Zaake Butebi who was tortured until he became unconscious and later dumped at Lubaga hospital by unknown people expected to be security forces.
Kyadondo East member of parliament hon Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine was also tortured during the fracas which left at least five people and scores injured.
The hearing of bail application for the 33 jailed treason suspects will be held tomorrow at Gulu high court.
