Former Forum for Democratic Change President Dr Kizza Besigye on Saturday took time off from national mobilisation to attend the send off of Canon Yonasani Kapiira 89yrs of Rwembogo Village, Nyakagyeme, Rukungiri district.
Mzee Canon Kapiira, a renown opinion leader in Rukungiri district, was one of pioneer mobilisers of Reform Agenda in an area where recruiting people for change and promoting Reform Agenda was forbidden.
Kapiira remained firm and working with one of his son, they used their home as recruiting ground, and one time accused by the NRM government of recruiting rebels.
At 89, he retired with a firm belief that president Yoweri Kaguta Museveni would be defeated.
In his last years on earth, Kizza Besigye often visited him at his farm house in Nyakagyeme where they talked and took notes about the struggle.
While eulogising him Besigye said Kapiira was true to his friends and kept them close. As a teacher and farmer, Besigye said, “Kapiira was generous with his knowledge and shared so much produce and livestock with people.”
Besigye credited Kapiira for remaining true to the values he fought for.
“Kapiira was sometimes mocked for going against Mr. Museveni and NRM at difficult time. He has gone to rest when Rukungiri is liberated. His efforts were not in vain”, Besigye said.
He went and told the mourners that, several people out there have taken it as their roles in fighting those who are at the forefront of the struggle.
He vowed never to leave the struggle until his dreams of liberating Uganda from Museveni is realized.
